Review: Canada's Top 100 Employers

By Sara Parent

Are you feeling underappreciated at your current job? Or are you a human resources professional looking for information about a specific company? You're going to want to check out Canada's Top 100 Employers. It is a valuable resource for anyone looking for top performers.

The book, this year in its fourth edition, is a review of Canada's top employers rated by various elements. These elements include Physical Workplace, Work Atmosphere & Social, Health, Financial & Family Benefits, Vacation & Time Off, Employee Communications, Performance Management, and Training & Skills Development. Employers are given grades according to these elements.

Over 51,000 employers across Canada were initially looked at. The list was then narrowed down to 6,000. Of those, questionnaires were sent out, and then the top 100 were found.

Curious to know who made the list?

There are lots of large companies such as Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, Toronto Transit Commission, and Proctor & Gamble Inc., but there are smaller companies too, showing that you don't need to be big to be great.

The book also features a top ten list of companies. Who's the top employer for vacations and time off? Suncor Energy who gives their employees three weeks paid vacation in their first year, as well as 17 paid personal days a year.

Who's the top employer for women? Maritime Travel Inc., based in Halifax Nova Scotia, is Atlantic Canada's largest travel agency and 97% of its staff are women.

This book is a great resource if you are looking to get into the job market or make a change. Why not start with Canada's Top 100 Employers? It makes sense.

Canada's Top 100 Employers is published by Mediacorp Canada Inc.The book retails for $22.95.
